This catalog includes individual photo-identifications (IDs) of gray whales on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, collected over 50 years from 1970-2019, and including some IDs from 2020. The photo-identification work centered on the Long Beach-Clayoquot Sound region, however, over this span of time, there were years of extensive ID work down-island along the West Coast Trail to Port Renfrew, and up-island including Cape Scott at its northern tip.

Most of these gray whales are ‘multi-years’ identified in these Vancouver Island feeding grounds in more than one year. That is, whales who returned to this region repeatedly after, presumably, winter migrations to Mexico. Many of these whales have been known by researchers, local residents, and whale watch companies for decades. In this edition, September 2022, there are 184 individuals in this category.
